Our Vision
Museum Victoria will contribute to our communities' understanding of the world, and ensure that our inheritance is augmented and passed to future generations. We will reach out to an increasingly diverse audience through our collections and knowledge using innovative programs that engage and fascinate.
Imagine living in a world without television, telephones, movies, video players, computers and the Internet.
That world existed a little more than a hundred years ago. It was a world in which museums fulfilled an important service to the community by collecting and displaying objects which most people had no other means of seeing.
Today, the amount of available information and the means of accessing it are growing exponentially. The challenge for museums in the 21st century is not only to collect, preserve and display objects, but to become two-way conduits for knowledge.
With its vast collections, expertise and knowledge built up over more than a century, Museum Victoria is a comprehensive resource, interpreting and providing reliable information which people can access without having to wade through a plethora of unverified material.
Through its educational programs and services, Museum Victoria will highlight significant present day issues within historic, present and future contexts, and promote public debate on these issues to assist the growth and well being of society.
Museum Victoria welcomes all individuals and communities and aims to inspire a sense of wonder, respect and greater understanding of ourselves and our world.
