The Student Reports listed in the menu on the right provide students with a step-by-step guide to using the Bioinformatics database to prepare reports on the chosen fauna in their district, or alternatively, in Victoria as a whole. While putting together their reports, students will be introduced to the main features of the website, and will become aware of the importance of data patterning and manipulation. Primary school students will probably need some assistance with the projects, but older students should be able to work independently.

Four additional projects for VCE and Tertiary students are provided at the bottom of the menu. Senior students may wish to access the Bioinformatics databases directly, by using the links in the menu on the left. Five major databases are currently available:

• Victorian Butterflies contains 40,000 records on 143 species
• Victorian Snakes contains 3,000 records on 27 species
• Victorian Frogs contains 25,000 records on 34 species
• Victorian Mammals contains 165,000 records on 139 species
• Victorian Lizards contains 20,000 records on 87 species

Teachers should note that the student projects relate closely to the Learning Outcomes of the Curriculum and Standards Frameworks (CSFII) and the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).
